The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), delivered through Edexcel, offers students a valuable opportunity to explore an area of personal interest in real depth, while developing the independent study skills that are essential for success beyond Sixth Form.
Students can choose between two distinct pathways. The first is the Artefact route, which allows students to create a tangible outcome linked to their chosen topic. This could take the form of a piece of art, a design prototype, a short film, or another creative or technical product. This option is particularly well suited to students who enjoy practical work and want to demonstrate creativity, problem-solving and technical skill alongside their research.
Alternatively, students may choose the dissertation route, where they investigate a research question of their own design. This involves planning and conducting detailed research, evaluating sources and constructing a clear, well-argued written response. It is an excellent preparation for university-style study and supports the development of critical thinking and extended writing.
Whichever pathway is chosen, all students are required to engage in independent research, reflect on their progress and present their final outcomes.
The EPQ is highly regarded by universities as it demonstrates initiative, resilience and intellectual curiosity. It is also worth up to half an A Level (equivalent to an AS qualification), making it a meaningful addition to a student’s academic profile.
