Why study Travel and Tourism?
Travel and Tourism is a dynamic and fast-growing industry that plays a vital role in the global economy. This course explores how different organisations—such as airlines, hotels, and tourist attractions—work together to create memorable experiences for customers. Students will learn about destinations, customer needs, and the factors that influence travel, from global events to changing consumer trends.
Travel and Tourism is a constantly evolving sector, shaped by issues such as sustainability, technology, and globalisation. Studying this course encourages curiosity about the wider world and helps you understand the social, economic, and environmental impacts of tourism at local, national, and international levels.
What does the course involve?
The Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Travel and Tourism (2022) is a practical, coursework-based qualification that combines real-world knowledge with applied skills. The course is structured into three components, allowing students to build understanding step by step.
In Component 1 (Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations), students explore the different types of organisations in the industry—such as airlines, accommodation providers, and visitor attractions—and investigate what makes destinations appealing to different types of travellers. This is assessed through coursework
In Component 2 (Customer Needs in Travel and Tourism), the focus shifts to understanding customers. Students learn how organisations meet different needs, plan holidays, and deliver high-quality customer service, developing communication and planning skills along the way. This is assessed through coursework.
Finally, Component 3 (Influences on Global Travel and Tourism) is assessed through an external exam and looks at the bigger picture. Students examine how factors such as economic change, technology, sustainability, and global events impact the industry.
Assessment is mainly through coursework, where students complete assignments based on realistic scenarios, alongside one externally assessed exam. This approach helps students develop independence, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply their knowledge in practical contexts—preparing them for further study or careers in the travel and tourism sector.
