GCSE Film Studies
Film studies is an optional subject available from Y10 onwards.
GCSE Film Studies is an engaging and rigorous course that invites students to explore the language of cinema, from camera, editing and sound, through to narrative, genre and representation. It combines analytical study of set films (US, international and UK) with a hands-on production project (film extract or screenplay and reflective analysis).
Students develop critical thinking, visual literacy, analytical writing, creative skills and project management. The course encourages learners to see how films reflect and shape social, historical and cultural contexts, deepening their understanding of identity, ideology and storytelling.
Because film is inherently multimodal (encompassing sound, image, and narrative), it appeals to a wide range of learning styles. In our small, supportive, specialist environment, students are guided to bring their ideas to life and learn to express them confidently. It complements English, Humanities and Media studies by fostering transferable skills in analysis, argument, creativity and media understanding — making it a valuable and distinctive option at Key Stage
