All Children Can Achieve

Work Experience and Careers Guidance

Everyone of our students at Burlington House Sixth Form are unique and will approach things at a different pace and have different interests.  For those who are keen to get some substantial work experience we have a growing work experience programme which runs alongside the academic lessons and enrichment programme to help support our students to begin to take their first steps towards future careers and employment.  Burlington House has strong partnerships with Bush Hall (our local live music venue) with Music House for Children and the Next Door Records Cafe.  Other partnerships include:  The Irish Centre, Petit Miracles, Scotties Coffee, Dark Sphere, Suzu Restaurant and Sovereign Comics.   We are always looking for new and diverse companies to join our list of partnership companies so that our students have the opportunity in many different areas of potential work.

We also have an annual Progression Event where outside providers come in to discuss further education opportunities and work opportunities for life after Sixth Form with students and their guardians.  These include Colleges, Internships and Apprenticeships. For other students we guide them through the UCAS application process towards University.

We run industry days at Bush Hall where all the students can participate in the following:  Ticketing, Box Office, Event Promotion, Sound & Lighting and Performance & Composition.  From the industry days, students can explore more organised specific work experiences linked to those areas.

Some of our students complete Barista training with Lou Scott from Scotties Coffee and often progress to working in local cafes, farmers markets or at Next Door Records Cafe.

Some of our students’ first steps might be working on employability skills in our Life Skills lessons or SALT group sessions, to slowly build their confidence to work a couple of hours a week somewhere by the end of year one.  It might be travel training to make them independent travellers.

We offer additional support including:

  • 1:1 careers advice and guidance
  • Mock interviews to practise key interview skills
  • Opportunities to visit UCAS/Higher Education conferences/Job and Apprenticeship Shows
  • Support for personal statements and CVs
  • Access to Unifrog
  • Progression Event (as mentioned above)
